How do you feel about his death? I have lots of mixed feelings - I truly believe he was a tortured soul and I hope he is finally at peace. But he was a musical genius, that must be acknowledged even if you weren't a Beach Boys fan.

Love and Mercy is an excellent movie, but pretty difficult to watch if you haven't seen it.

We saw him in concert at Ravinia (outside of Chicago) probably ten (?) years ago. He was a pathetic looking soul - could hardly move, and had to have an aid to assist him getting to his piano and offstage again. His backup singers basically carried his vocals as his were pretty shot. But I can at least say I saw one of the greatest.

My daughter had a friend who tutored Wilson's children at one point. She said he was pretty out of it for a long time. In hindsight with that knowledge, it's remarkable that he managed to complete the tour that we saw him in so many years ago. I did read that he'd been diagnosed with dementia - with the drug-induced brain damage he had, it must have been a terrifying decline.

RIP

The music is something else...
Not exactly my preferred genre but I have spent quite some time listening to Beach Boys records. It’s so amazing how creative musically and technically these guys could be considering the conditions and equipment they had. It’s well known that in many songs you can hear background noise, probably the studio air-conditioning. To me it makes this highly structured and technically difficult music so spontaneous and personal. Its near-impossible to imagine any music these days without overproducing to a stage of sterile perfection – technically sound, but totally unfulfilling.

At his age, his health and his life, his passing gives me a reason to maybe go through Pet Sounds while sipping an appropriate cocktail and maybe thank the powers that are for having shared time on Earth with him, but I also find peace in knowing he lived a full life.

Yeah he definitely had some issues. Some speculate some version of Lewy Body, which ironically my bestie through middle and HS we sang their songs all the time her lead me back up, and she too was dx this spring with the same. It's awful. She is gone already. She has terrible hallucinations, has not tolerated a y meds to quiet her mind and is rapidly losing weight and mobility. It hurts my heart so much.

Seeing DMB tomorrow. I fully expect a cover from the beach boys and Sly and the family. Been a rough week for great music.
